Smoking is pretty incredible. It’s a fact. Recently a National Study was done about smoking and the effect it has on not only the physical wellbeing of an individual, but on the mental wellbeing of an individual as well. While I’m not at liberty to divulge who funded this study, nor am I at liberty to reveal the nature of the test sample, I do think that you will find some of the findings of the study to be quite enlightening and interesting. One of the subsections of this comprehensive study involved querying subjects on the times when smoking a cigarette is most satisfying and pleasurable. I cannot confirm if this line of questioning will be used in planning future advertising campaigns, as that would imply that the funders of this study have a financial stake in the production and distribution of cigarettes, which I am not at liberty to confirm or deny. I have been given permission, however, to list some of the most satisfying tax free cigarettes the average smoker enjoys in his or her day to life.

The government of Ontario suffers from profound hypocrisy. The LCBO even has a nice web presence paid for, undoubtedly, by the tax-payer. How does that make sense? Further, alcohol causes more problems in society than smoking. If you smoke, you’ll kill yourself. Pretty stupid but, OK, smoke if you want. Alcohol, although it can and may be used responsibly, wreaks a lot of havoc in society. If you get drunk, and drive, you may well kill someone else. If you are a drunk at home, you will "kill" your marriage and family.

Most parents understand how gullible little kids are. We know where our little ones get their ideas for their Christmas УwishФ lists Ц Saturday morning television shows. Tobacco companies have been banned from advertising their products by sponsoring such programs. In fact, those powerwalls are about all they have left as an advertising tool, and they are making the most of them. While fewer people than ever are smoking, the number of teenagers in Ontario who smoke remains disturbingly high, about 18 per cent, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The same studies indicate about a third of adult smokers took up the habit when they were under 12 years old, and by the time they hit high school, more than half of our kids have tried cigarettes. Something must be done to cut those numbers. Those opposed to the ban on powerwall discount cigarettes advertising say it is time for a reality check.

The tax hike nearly doubles the incentive for the rest of them to follow suit.Ф NYACS predicts the intensified tax evasion stampede will be disastrous for state revenues, public health, and small businesses. They say: ЦIt will hinder, rather than help, anti-smoking efforts by driving more sales to outlets beyond the reach of tobacco regulation, such as monitoring by state or local health departments to detect and punish sales of cheap cigarettes to children.

This is true enough, and I’ve often made a similar argument. But honest opponents of prohibition have to admit that leakage from the adult market for any legal intoxicant is inevitable. Note that the rate for past-month alcohol consumption in the same survey was 45 percent, making it more than twice as common among teenagers as pot smoking. (That’s up from 43 percent in 2005 but the same as in 2003.) To project the impact that repealing prohibition would have on underage pot smoking, you need to weigh the effect of regulation against the effect of easier, safer, and cheaper availability to adults. Then there’s the question of how much weight should be attached to the risk of increased consumption by minors. To me, underage free cigarettes smoking is more troubling (legal issues aside) than underage drinking or pot smoking, because it is much more likely to result in a long-term habit that has serious health consequences. If adults have a fundamental right to control their bodies and the chemicals that go into them, the possibility that some may deliberately or accidentally share those chemicals with minors does not justify violating that right. But most Americans do not accept that premise, so predictions about how repealing prohibition would affect The Children are unavoidable.

"Tobacco retailers can be fined or put out of business if they sell to kids, but prohibition guarantees that we have zero control over marijuana dealers. Foolish policies have guaranteed that the marijuana industry is completely unregulated."
